Abstract

836,546. Propellant powders. OLIN MATHIESON CHEMICAL CORPORATION. Oct. 31, 1958 [Nov. 6, 1957], No. 35043/58. Class 9(2) Propellant powder grains having a porous interior and a dense outer layer are made by suspending propellant powder grains in a non-solvent medium, softening the grains by adding to the suspension a solvent for the grains that is only partially miscible with the non- solvent medium, removing a portion of the solvent from the grains (as by raising the temperature of the suspension), adding to the non-solvent medium a solute for it, the solute being substantially insoluble in the solvent, and removing the remainder of the solvent from the grains while the latter are still suspended in the non- 'solvent medium. Water is the preferred non-solvent, but glycerine, benzene and chlorinated hydrocarbons may also be used. Solvents include ethyl acetate, methyl acetate, isobutyl acetate, methyl isobutyl ketone and methyl ethyl ketone. Sodium sulphate, barium nitrate, potassium nitrate, ammonium sulphate and sugar are specified as solutes. A protective colloid such as animal glue or starch may be added to the non-solvent suspending medium.
