Abstract

836,510. Stuffing-box substitutes. PERFECT CIRCLE CORPORATION. Aug. 21, 1958, No. 26886/58. Class 122 (5). The stem 14 of an internal combustion engine valve is sealed by a split L-section metal collar 25 engaging the stem and embedded in the transverse wall 32 of a rubber &c. cup-shaped member 31 which resiliently fits over the end of the valve guide 15. The wall 32 extends beyond the collar 25 to contact the stem as at 33 and may be bonded to the collar by vulcanizing or by an adhesive. The collar 25, preferably of cast iron, has a notch 30, Fig. 6, in its radial flange 27 and an irregular split 26 in its cylindrical portion 25 formed by fracturing and is internally tapered towards its upper end. The bore of the member 31, in its free state, tapers towards its open end and its grip on the guide 15 is augmented by a metal spring ring 36.
