Abstract

An indole derivative of the formula <FORM:0836477/III/1> wherein R is hydrogen or an acyl group and the nucleus A may bear substituents, which may be halogen, nitro, acylamino, alkyl, hydroxy, alkoxy and/or carboxylic acid radicals, is added to soap, to impart antibacterial properties to materials washed therewith. Specifications 809,691 and 835,473 are referred to.ALSO:Polymeric materials contain in adsorbed or absorbed form at least 0.0001% of their dry weight of an indole derivative of the formula <FORM:0836477/IV(c)/1> wherein R is hydrogen or an acyl group and the nucleus A may bear substituents. These substituents may be halogen, nitro, acylamino, alkyl, hydroxy, alkoxy and/or carboxylic acid radicals. The polymeric materials may be natural or regenerated cellulose, cellulose derivatives, proteins, rubber or synthetic polymers and may be in fibrous form. Silk, wool, cotton, flax, hemp, ligno-celluloses, nylons, polyesters, polyacrylics, synthetic protein fibres derived from casein, peanuts, soyabean, zein, fish waste or animal skin or muscle tissue, polyethylene, polystyrene and polyvinyl chloride are mentioned. The materials may be treated by applying, by steeping or spraying, a solution of the indole derivative in water or in, e.g., ethanol, propylene glycol or polyethylene glycol and subsequently removing the solvent. The treated materials have antibacterial properties. Bandages and surgical dressings including elastic and adhesive bandages may be treated. Specifications 809,691 and 835,473 are referred to.ALSO:Polymeric materials contain in adsorbed or absorbed form at least 0.0001% of their dry weight of an indole derivative of the formula <FORM:0836477/IV (a)/1> wherein R is hydrogen or an acyl group and the nucleus A may bear substituents. These substituents may be halogen, nitro, acylamino, alkyl, hydroxy, alkoxy and/or carboxylic acid radicals. The polymeric materials may be natural or regenerated cellulose, cellulose derivatives, proteins, rubber, synthetic polymers or the products of linseed and other "drying" oils and may be in fibrous or non-fibrous form, e.g. films, foils or moulded articles. Silk, wool, cotton, flax, hemp, ligno - celluloses, nylons, polyesters, polyacrylics, synthetic protein fibres derived from casein, peanuts, soyabean, zein, fish waste, animal skin or muscle tissue, polyethylene, polystyrene, polyvinyl chloride, phenol-formaldehyde, urea- and melamine-formaldehyde resins and silicones are mentioned. The materials may be treated by applying, by steeping or spraying, a solution of the indole derivative in water or in, e.g. ethanol, propylene glycol or polyethylene glycol and subsequently removing the solvent, or by adding the indole derivative to a solution of the polymer before its extrusion into filament or its conversion into film, foil or other shaped articles. The indole derivative may be added to a collodion which may then be painted on to the skin or sprayed on to a wound, and the solvent or solvent mixture allowed to evaporate. The treated materials have antibacterial properties. Bandages and surgical dressings including elastic and adhesive bandages may be treated. Specifications 809,691 and 835,473 are referred to.ALSO:Polymeric materials contain in adsorbed or abosrbed form at least 0.0001% of their dry weight of an indole derivative of the formula <FORM:0836477/VI/1> wherein R is hydrogen or an acyl group and the nucleus A may bear substituents.
