Abstract
836,412. Winding cable &c. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES Ltd. May 17, 1957 [May 18 1956], No. 15685/56. Class 120(2) In apparatus for winding cable &c. on a drum, a sensing device is provided for reversing the direction of traverse at the completion of each layer, comprising a blade, carried on the free end of and transersely to an arm, which bears on the last turn wound and is tiltable by pressure of the cable as a new layer is started to effect automatically the reversal of the direction of the traverse. The cable passes to the drum between upstanding bars 35, Fig. 2, on a stand which may move along a stationary drum, or as shown, be stationary with a movable drum. An arm 40 is secured to the stand in such a way that a blade 42 on its end 'tilts on the leading-edge of the cable and that when the last turn of a layer is completed and a new layer is begun the tilt is reversed to rotate the arm and cause a projection 60 to close the appropriate pair of two pairs of electrical contacts, whereby a reversing switch is operated to energize one of two solenoids. In hydraulically operated forms the solenoids operate a reversing valve: in a mechanical form, they operate a clutch which determines the direction of rotation of a lead-screw carrying a threaded block on the stand and holding the bars 35 through which the cable passes. Means are provided as in Specification 836,411 for controlling the speed of the traverse operated by contacts closed by movement of a member carrying the bars 35 an mounted on the stand.
