Abstract

836,411. Cable &c. winding apparatus. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES Ltd. May 17, 1957 [May 18, 1956], No. 15584/56. Class 120(2) Apparatus for winding cable &c. on a drum comprises a guide for the cable, a variable-speed traversing drive to provide relative movement between the guide and the drum in a direction parallel to the axis of the drum, and a detector responsive to any divergence of the path of the cable from a direction normal to the axis of the drum effective to change the speed of the drive to counteract the divergence. The detector may take the form of a lever 36, Fig. 3, with arms 35 against one of which, according to the direction of traverse, the leading edge of the cable bears as winding proceeds so as to cause the lever to pivot, against spring-action, to close one of two contact pins 67, 68. In a form in which the traverse is hydraulically operated, Fig. 5, closure of the pair corresponding to the setting of a reversing switch 100 energizes a solenoid 18 which controls a throttle-valve 16 governing the flow to a piston which moves the drum or the guide as the case may be. In another form, Fig. 6, closure of the appropriate pair energizes one of two solenoids 20, 30 operating a clutch 117 by which can be driven from a shaft 113 in one direction or another a rod 108 in threaded engagement with a bridge 111 carrying the lever 36. In these forms, the reversing switch 100 is operated when it engages the drum or the guide, whichever is movable: in both forms it energizes one of two solenoids 29, 30 which in Fig. 5 control a reversing valve 17 and in Fig. 6 the clutch 117. In a third form which is hydraulically operated and provides a modified electrical circuit for the solenoid 18 operating the throttle 16, reversal is effected by a tiltable plate 42 riding on the leading edge of the cable as described in Specification 836,412.
