836,369. Variable-speed gears. SELFCHANGING GEARS Ltd. March 7, 1958 [March 19, 1957], No. 8988/57. Class 80 (2). The reaction planet carrier 9 of a basic reverse train A, having an input sun 1 and output ring 6, is permitted to rotate forwards at successively increasing speeds to provide two reduced forward ratios by compounding with a second train B, and with second and third trains B, C respectively, both trains B, C having members connected to the output shaft 5. A clutch 29 locks the sun and carrier of the train C for direct drive. The shaft 5 drives a final output 40 through overdrive and reduced drive auxiliary sun-ring trains F, E in parallel. For reverse the carrier 9 is braked at 11 and the basic train A acts alone. For low, a brake 20 holds a sun 16 of the train B through the connected carrier 18 of the train C. The carrier 9 of the basic train A is permitted to rotate forwards by connection to a ring 13 of the train B, teh carrier 7 of which is fast to the output shaft 5. Trains A and B compounded. For the higher reduced speed a sun 21 of the train C is braked at 25, further accelerating the carrier 9 of the basic train A through a connection in which an output-mounted ring 14 of the train C drives the sun 16 of the train B through the connected planet carrier 18 of the train C. Trains A, B and C are compounded.
