Abstract
836,221. Respiratory appliances. BRITISH OXYGEN CO. Ltd. Jan. 27, 1958 [Jan. 25, 1957], No. 2796/57. Class 81 (2). A disposable face mask, preferably made of polyvinyl chloride, is formed as a substantially closed bag 10 with a pouch 11 attached to one wall so that oxygen, entering through a tube 12, passes through the bag and out through apertures 13 into the pouch 11. The latter is fitted around the user's nose and chin by means of a head band. The mask has exhaust apertures 14 so that, in use, the bag serves as a rebreathing bag from which oxygen is withdrawn for inhalation. On exhalation, the first part of the exhaled air, which has a relatively low CO 2 content, passes back into the bag 10, but, when this is full, the latter part of the exhalation passes out through the apertures 14. An additional, small aperture 15 may be provided at the bottom of the pouch for drainage of moisture. Various different constructional arrangements are described.
