Abstract
Hydrocarbon sulphonyl chlorides are prepared by adding to a stream of liquid hydrocarbons selected from aliphatic and long-chain-aliphatic-substituted aromatic hydrocarbons, up to one pound, preferably 0.01 to 0.5 pounds, of sulphur dioxide per 30 U.S. gallons of the stream to dissolve the sulphur dioxide in the liquid hydrocarbon, introducing the resulting solution into a mixing chamber, introducing into the mixing chamber from 1.0 to 2.0 pounds of gaseous chlorine per pound of sulphur dioxide, and dissolving the chlorine in the aforesaid solution, passing the solution of liquid hydrocarbons, sulphur dioxide and chlorine through a glass tube, irradiated with actinic light and recycling the solution, continuously adding sulphur dioxide and chlorine. Preferably the rate of flow of the stream exceeds two U.S. gallons a minute, e.g. 0.01 to 20 feet per second, and the weight ratio of chlorine to sulphur dioxide is about 1.4. The reaction tube may be 1/2 to 6, preferably 1 to 1.5 inches in diameter and 30 to 100 feet long. The flow in the reaction tube is preferably turbulent. The mixing chamber should be as small as possible consistent with efficient mixing to reduce unwanted chlorination; 20 to 500 cubic inches are mentioned.
