Abstract
Liquid organic compounds which are insoluble or only slightly soluble in water or aqueous solutions are chlorinated with gaseous chlorine in a process in which water or an aqueous solution is led into the layer of organic liquid during the reaction. The organic liquid may be aliphatic or aromatic and specifically may be liquid paraffin, benzene and homologues, terpenes, dioxane, chlorobenzene, toluene, or phenol; they may be mixed, e.g. with an inert solvent. The chlorination may be either additive of substitutive, e.g. benzene may give hexachlorocyclohexane or hexachlorobenzene. In the case of phenol or dioxan, an aqueous solution, e.g. of calcium chloride, should be used. Three apparatuses are described in which liquids either lighter or heavier than water may be chlorinated, with particular reference to the preparation of benzene hexachloride. The chlorine is led into the lower layer, whether aqueous or organic, and some additional water is preferably caused to flow round the end of the chloric supply tube to prevent it blocking. The water may be slightly alkaline, e.g. as produced by passing it through calcium hydroxide.
