Abstract

836,045. Hydraulic shock absorbers. BRUNET, M.A. April 24, 1957 [April 25, 1956], No. 13003/57. Class 108(3) A hydraulic damper comprises a chamber 1 containing a member 31 and a liquid which is circulated by pressure caused by relative movement between the member 31 and the chamber anc wherein the liquic at a temperature of 25‹C. has a viscosity higher than 30 poises and advantageously between 100 and 100( poises. The liquid which may be a silicone e.g. methyl silicone, circulates from one side to the other of the member 31 through a constricted passage-way comprising the clearance between the parts 31 and 1, thus close tolerances are unnecessary. Alternatively, nylon spacer members may be fitted into grooves in the member 31 which may, if its diameter is only just less than the internal diameter of the chamber 1, be longitudinally grooved to form the liquid passageways. A shaft 6 carrying the member 31 is slidingly fitted in an end cap 3 of bronze, nylon or aluminium alloy having a synthetic rubber seal 4 held in place by a cap 5. A part 3<SP>1</SP> rigid with the cap 3 forms an additional braking action when it coacts with the cupped portion of the member 31, and, so that excessive pressure is not made on the seal 4, an internal recess 32 is provided to communicate through apertures 33 with the chamber 1. A rubber gum washer 8 contains substances which slowly dissolve in the liquid to compensate for any reduction in viscosity. A thermal compensating device, Fig. 8, may be incorporated and comprises an additional passageway between a head 27 and a resilient split ring 26. When there is an increase in temperature, expansion of the mass of an annular rubber block causes a compression of the ring 26 which lessens the gap between it and the head 27.
