Abstract

835,933. Electric measuring systems. COAL INDUSTRY (PATENTS) Ltd. April 11; 1958 [April 11, 1957], No. 11881/57. Addition to 756,662. Class 40 (1). [Also in Group XL (c)] The apparatus for the determination of the percentage carbon monoxide in an atmosphere described in the parent Specification by measuring the temperature difference between two: thermistors each in the atmosphere, one of the thermistors being also located in contact with an oxidizer, the teinperature difference being determined by measuring the change in resistance, is modified by using transistors instead of thermionic valves in the electrical circuits, with additional ambient temperature compensation. As shown, a transistor oscillator T1 has a large degree of negative feed-back between base and emitter, and positive feed-back via a transformer TT1 sufficient to saturate the transistor on the negative swing and to cut it off on the positive swing, to produce a rectangular output voltage between zero and a maximum value determined by emitter resistors R4, R5, R6 selected by switch SW1a, and adjusted by potentiometer VR1. The. oscillator feeds through a buffer stage T2 to a bridge incorporating the measuring thermistors 4, 5. The bridge unbalance voltage is amplified by transistors T3, T4, whose gain is adjusted by potentiometers VR2, VR3 to differ from optimum in a sense to compensate for variation in sensitivity with temperature, and rectified at MR, to be shown on a meter M1, and to control an audible alarm PH and visual alarm WL via relay winding RL.
