Abstract
Polypropylene is made by heating at a temperature of from 100-170 DEG C., a mixture of propylene and a catalyst composed of titanium trichloride and tri-isobutyl aluminium. The reaction may be conducted in bulk or in an inert hydrocarbon solvent such as a saturated aliphatic or cycloaliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon, and under a pressure which is maintained constant during the course of the reaction. The reaction may be terminated by destroying the catalyst, for example by the addition to the mixture of a mono- or polyhydric alcohol, or water containing up to 10% of hydrochloric acid. The product which consists of amorphous and crystalline polypropylene can be separated by extraction with suitable inert, non-polar solvent medium. The polypropylene may be used for the production of moulded articles, films, coatings, fibres, as a condenser tape, and as an insulator for wiring, gears, and gear-boxes.
