Abstract
A catalyst used for polymerizing propylene is obtained by reacting 1 mol. of TiCl4 with 1 to 4 mols. of RNa and 0.05 to 3 mols. of R2Cd, wherein R is a C2 to C5 hydrocarbon radicle. Specifie hydrocarbon compounds are amyl and allyl sodium and diethyl and diamyl cadmium.ALSO:Crystalline propylene is prepared by polymerization in one or more hydrocarbon solvents using a catalyst obtained by reacting 1 mol. of TiCl4 with 1 to 4 mols. of RNa and 0.05 to 3 mols. of R2Cd, wherein R is a C2 to C5 hydrocarbon radicle. Specified catalyst components are amyl and allyl sodium and diethyl and diamyl cadmium, and sodium chloride or lithium chloride (formed during the preparation of the sodium or cadmium compounds) may also be present in the reaction medium. The hydrocarbon solvent may be pentane, heptane, octane or an aromatic hydrocarbon, although when using liquid propylene only sufficient for manipulation of the catalyst, is required. Propylene (optionally diluted with an inert gas) and catalyst, or the components thereof, may be added during the polymerization. In examples, the catalyst is destroyed and removed with ethanol, ethanolic hydrochloric acid and water. Antioxidants may be added to the products which may be formed into sheets, tubes or threads and which find application as textiles, glues and protective coatings.
