Abstract

An organic pigment dispersion is made by kneading an aqueous paste of an organic pigment with a polymeric N-vinylpyrrolidone or a polyvinyl alcohol, the ratio of organic pigment to polymer being at least 1 : 1 and not more than 10 : 1. A large number of organic pigments are specified. The polymeric N-vinylpyrrolidones used are those having the formula <FORM:0835637/IV (a)/1> where R is hydrogen or methyl, R1 is hydrogen, methyl or ethyl and n is a number sufficient to give the polymer a molecular weight of 500-200,000. The polyvinyl alcohols used are of the p water-soluble type having in a 4% aqueous solution at 20 DEG C. a viscosity of 10-70 centipoises. The dispersions when either wet or dry may be used for pigmenting oleoresinous or water systems, e.g. styrene-butadiene, acrylic or polyvinyl acetate latices.
