Abstract

Fibres, foils and the like of polyvinyl derivatives are dyed with an aqueous emulsion which contains a water-insoluble dyestuff or component, a dispersing agent, and at least two organic liquids, one being a swelling agent for the polyvinyl derivative and comprising a higher aromatic hydrocarbon such as xylene, an aliphatic or aromatic chlorinated solvent such as methylene dichloride, ethylene dichloride, trichlorethylene, carbon tetrachloride or benzyl chloride, hydrogenated naphthalene derivatives such as deca- and tetra-hydronaphthalenes, aliphatic alcohols containing at least 5 carbon atoms and their esters such as amyl alcohols and amyl acetate, or terpenes such as turpentine and pine needle oil, and the other being a hardening agent for the polyvinyl derivative and comprising a hydrogenated benzene derivative such as cyclohexanol or methyl cyclohexanol, an aliphatic alcohol containing not more than three carbon atoms, aldehydes such as formaldehyde and acetaldehyde, an amine such as mono-, di-, and triethanolamine, or polyvalent alcohols and their derivatives such as glycol, glycerine, ethyl glycol and butyl glycol. The proportion of swelling to hardening agent is preferably 1 : 1. In examples: (1) polyvinyl chloride fibres are dyed with an emulsion containing tetrahydronaphthalene, methylcyclohexanol and Artisil Diazo Black GP, and then diazotized and developed with b -hydroxynaphthoic acid; (2) a copolymer of vinyl chloride and vinylidene chloride is dyed with an emulsion containing trichloroethylene, cyclohexanol and Viscofil Yellow P8G; (3) a copolymer fibre of vinyl chloride and acrylonitrile is dyed with an emulsion containing tetrahydronaphthalene, cyclohexanol, Sandozol Green B and sodium nitrite, and then developed with sulphuric acid; (4) a polyvinyl chloride fibre is dyed with an emulsion containing ethylene dichloride, cyclohexanol and Momentogen Red B; (5) a copolymer fibre of vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate is dyed with an emulsion containing tetrahydronaphthalene, methylcyclohexanol and Sandothrene Brilliant Green N2B, followed by addition of caustic soda and sodium hydrosulphite and subsequently oxidizing the dyeing; (6) a copolymer fibre of vinyl acetate and acrylonitrile is dyed in an emulsion containing tetrahydronaphthalene, methylcyclohexanol and Artisil Direct Blue BRP; and (7) a copolymer fibre of vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride and acrylonitrile is dyed with an emulsion containing ethylene chloride, triethanolamine and Artisil Direct Violet 2RP. An emulsifier is present in each case.
