Abstract

835,612. Stuffing-boxes. CIMENTS LAFARGE. July 10, 1957 [July 19, 1956], No. 21890/57. Class 122 (5). [Also in Groups XII and XIII] Slurry &c. is prevented from spilling over the top edge of an inclined rotary kiln or drier 1, Fig. 9, by a trough 24 disposed adjacent thereto through the intermediary of a fluid-tight seal. The trough is carried by a ring 36 through which an extension 32 of the kiln protrudes with a clearance therebetween. A fluid-tight segmental seal 31, having rings 29 defining seal chambers kept apart by U-shaped rings 30 which also serve to secure them to the ring 36, is mounted between the ring and the extension. In a modification, the seal 31, Fig. 10, is disposed within a kiln extension 25, the base and side walls of the trough 24 being welded to a ring 28 associated with the seal. Fig. 11 illustrates one half of the seal, the space between the rings 28, 36 being divided into four chambers 40 by rings 29, each chamber mounting three rows of segments 31 applied against the extension 25 by springs 41. The joints between the segments are radially disposed and, in each row, are angularly displaced relative to those in an adjacent row. Lubricant is forced into the chambers 40 through pipes 42 and a water-filled cooling chamber 44 is located in the centre of the seal. In another modification, the seal comprises segments 31, Fig. 12, rings 29, 36 and 38 and a water-filled chamber 37.
