783,466. Contacting gases with liquids. KITTEL, W. May 19, 1955 [May 31, 1954], No. 14516/55. Class 55 (2). In a gas-liquid contact apparatus in which the two media are led in countercurrent to one another, a vertical cylinder 2, Fig. 1, has apertures on its surface which make equal angles to the radius of curvature to impart a rotational flow to the media passing therethrough, and horizontal partitions 3, 4, Fig. 2, are vertically spaced inside and outside the cylinder 2 so that the media have to pass alternately from outside to inside the cylinder 2 and vice versa through the inclined apertures. In the region A a cylinder 5 concentric with cylinder 2 may be provided outside the latter and in region B a similar cylinder 6 provided inside cylinder 2, the cylinders 5, 6 having passages sloping oppositely to those in cylinder 2. In a modification the apertures in cylinder 2 slope in opposite directions in the regions A, B, so that the direction of rotation of the media is constant. In a further form the cylinder 2 is rotated, the cylinders 5, 6 remaining stationary. In another embodiment several cylinders are arranged concentrically or alternatively are arranged parallel to one another. Heat exchange pipes may be arranged between two concentric cylinders. Each cylinder may be formed of expanded metal or plastics, or profiled strips of cast iron, ceramic material or graphite may form the cylinder as in Fig. 8.
