Abstract

A hair-waving paste comprises a dispersion of a water-soluble alkaline borohydride in a water-soluble, easily fusible, synthetic wax which is inert to the borohydride, and a buffering agent. The composition may also include an agent which swells the fibre or assists the borohydride to penetrate the fibre. The borohydride is one which gives an alkaline reaction in aqueous solution and may be sodium, potassium, lithium, ammonium or an organic borohydride. The wax may be a condensate of an alkylene oxide, a polyoxyalkyl derivative of a higher fatty alcohol or a sulphate of a higher fatty alcohol. The buffering compound may be boric acid, sodium carbonate, sodium bicarbonate, ammonium hydrogen phosphate, potassium hydrogen phosphate, glycine or alanine. Swelling or other assistants specified are urea, thiourea, formamide, primary alcohols, glycols and polyglycols. In aqueous solution the composition may have a pH of 7 to 12. The hair may be moistened with the aqueous solution, wound in curlers and, after a period during which the hair may be heated, rinsed with a solution of lactic, citric or tartaric acid. In examples, the aqueous treating compositions comprise: (1) sodium borohydride, a polyethylene glycol wax, sodium borate, thiourea and ethanol; (3) sodium borohydride, sodium hydrogen phosphate, caustic soda, thiourea and ethyl alcohol.
