Abstract

835,190. Refrigerators. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORPORATION. July 17, 1958 [July 26, 1957], No. 22950/58. Class 29 A refrigerator comprises a heat insulating panel 18, Figs. 2 and 3, made of a core of discrete closed cell material 21, e.g. foamed plastic, faced with sheet members 22, 23 of plastic metal or fibre glass, a recess 37 being cut through sheet 22 and into material 21 to receive evaporator 31 and the compressor 28 and condenser 29 being mounted on another part of the panel. As shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the panel forms the back wall 17 of a built-in refrigerator 16 having storage compartments 11, 12. Recess 37 and evaporator 31 face compartment 11, an air circulating fan 46 is also received in recess 37, and a cover plate 20 having air inlet and outlet openings 42, 43 is fixed over recess 37. A second evaporator 30 extending into compartment 12 is mounted in a second recess 36 and further recesses 38, 39 receive thermal control element 32 and refrigerant piping. Plywood sheets may be interposed between material 21 and sheets 22, 23. In a modification. Fig. 6, panel 60 forms a partition dividing refrigerator 76 into two parts by sliding into top and bottom grooves 77, one part 61 being a storage compartment cooled by an evaporator located in a recess behind cover plate 64 having inlet and outlet apertures 65,. 66. A subsidiary panel 69 perpendicular to panel 60 divides the other part into an upper compartment 67 cooled by evaporator 77 carried by panel 60 and a lower compartment 68 for the compressor 72. The condenser 73 is carried by flexible pipes 74 on the rear of panel 60. In assembly, panel 60 is slid rearwards in grooves 77 until the condenser has passed through a slot 78 in the rear wall of the refrigerator, the condenser then being turned about flexible parts 74 to lie flat against the rear wall where it is secured by brackets.
