Abstract
834,815. Automatic X-ray intensity control systems. JOHNSON, R. N. June 6, 1956, No. 17454/56. Class 38 (4). Overall contrast on an X-ray film is reduced without loss of small-scale detail contrast by scanning the subject with a spot large compared with the scan-line spacing and with the detail required, and maintaining the total intensity of the X-rays transmitted through the subject substantially constant. As shown, an electron beam from a cathode 10 is caused to scan an X-ray producing target 22 by horizontal and vertical sweep generators 16 and 20 and hence a ray from aperture 24 in lead shield 26 forms a spot-scanning the subject 28 and producing an image on an X-ray sensitive film 32; the X-rays transmitted by the film are converted by scintillating element 34 into visible light which acts through photo-multiplier 36, amplifier 40, and control electrode 12 to keep the transmitted intensity substantially constant. Instead of the sweep generators 16 and 20, a scanning disc may be used between the X-ray source and the subject. The ratio of spot size to scan-line spacing may be from 3 : 1 to 10 : 1. Specification 790,509, describing a somewhat similar photographic method using visible light instead of X-rays, is referred to.
