Abstract

Glycerol and glycols are obtained from sugar alcohols by cracking and catalytic hydrogenation of a sugar in aqueous alkaline solution, the process being carried out at a temperature in the range 200-300 DEG C. and a hydrogen pressure of 500-1000 atm. in a solution having a pH of 8-10. The pH of the solution may be adjusted by the addition of calcium hydroxide. The preferred catalyst is nickel on a carrier, for example, pumice or kieselguhr. If a temperature higher than 250 DEG C. is required it may be produced by introducing oxygen under pressure into the reaction vessel to burn some of the hydrogen. The introduction of oxygen under pressure also reduces the resinification of the catalyst. Wood sugar alcohols obtained by the hydrogenation of wood sugars may be used as starting materials. In an example, sorbitol is cracked and catalytically hydrogenated to give glycerol and glycols along with a small amount of erythritol which may be submitted again to the process.
