Abstract

Polyalcohols are produced by hydrogenation of the corresponding sugars under pressure and in the presence of an aqueous solution of one or more aliphatic alcohols having from 1 to 3 carbon atoms, and a nickel catalyst, wherein the concentration of aliphatic alcohols in the aqueous solution is from 70 to 95 per cent by weight, preferably at least 80 per cent by weight. Preferred conditions are a pressure of at least 15 kg./cm.2, more particularly 15-25 kg./cm.2, and a temperature of 50-170 DEG C., more particularly 80-150 DEG C. The hydrogenation is preferably carried out batchwise in a closed vessel, the reacted mixture being allowed to settle, the clear solution withdrawn, and further starting material added for a further operation, or continuously by passing the heated sugar solution through a bed of nickel catalyst maintained under hydrogen pressure. The catalyst may be Raney nickel or nickel deposited on an inert carrier, e.g. kieselguhr. The polyalcohols can generally be crystallized from the reaction mixture merely by cooling. In examples: (1) glucose is hydrogenated to sorbitol, (2) invert sugar is hydrogenated to a mixture of sorbitol and mannitol, (3) laevulose is hydrogenated to mannitol, (4) xylose is hydrogenated to xylitol, and (5) a mixture containing laevulose and glucose is hydrogenated to mannitol and sorbitol.
