Abstract

Polyhydric alcohols are obtained by the catalytic hydrogenation of a mixture of sugars, obtained by the cold hydrolysis of vegetable materials containing hemicellulose and cellulose and produced by the process claimed in Specification 827,921, in the presence of a solvent for the sugars, the hydrogenation being carried out at a temperature below the boiling point of the sugar solution and the pH of the solution being maintained substantially between 7 and 8 throughout the hydrogenation. Alkali may be added initially to the solution to establish the required pH and further amounts may be added continually or continuously to maintain the pH at the required level. Suitable compounds for adding to the solution are sodium hydroxide, calcium hydroxide, sodium carbonate, calcium carbonate, magnesia or trimethylamine. It is preferred that in the mixtures of sugars used polymeric sugars should first be converted to monomeric sugars by further hydrolysis. Preferred catalysts are metallic nickel alone or on kieselguhr. The products are the polyhydric alcohols corresponding to the sugars present in the starting mixtures.
