Abstract
<PICT:0834421/III/1> An oxygen producing candle comprises a body 42 of oxygen producing material having top and bottom parallel faces and an ignition core 43 in an opening through the body, the body being formed to provide after an initial burning period, a burning area which becomes smaller as it recedes from the core, whereby oxygen will be produced at a diminishing rate. One or more oxygen generating candles, which provide respiration oxygen and heat until a chemical 12 of an oxygen generating canister in a breathing apparatus (see Group VI) begins to generate oxygen, are each located in a cup 15 inside a spring mounted below the canister. Each candle consists of a cylindrical body 42 of oxygen generating material with a downwardly tapering opening, the top of which is offset relative to the axis of the body to form a wall having a part of reduced thickness. When this wall part has burned through, the burning area of the remainder of the candle progressively decreases. A dimpled baffle 16, a screen 17 and a filter 18 are located above the candle. A detonating hammer 32 having a detachable cap 36 is fitted in a bracket below each candle. On removal of a cotter pin 34, the hammer 32 is urged by a tension spring against a primer 25 in the candle. Specification 834,422 is referred to.
