Abstract
Granular ammonium nitrate having a particle density of 1.5-1.65 gm./c.c. and a bulk density of 0.9-1.0 gm./c.c. is produced by spraying molten ammonium nitrate containing not more than 0.5% moisture into the top of a cooling tower in countercurrent to a stream of cooling gas, e.g. air at atmospheric or lower temperature. The ammonium nitrate may be cooled from a temperature of above 350 DEG F., preferably 355-360 DEG F., to one of not greater than 280 DEG F., preferably below 200 DEG F. The cooling gas may flow at a velocity of up to 700 ft./min., preferably less than 650 ft./min. Using air at ordinary temperature and a velocity of 625 ft./min. a temperature drop from 400 DEG to 195 DEG F. may be effected in a tower of height 50 ft. and a temperature drop from 400 DEG to 280 DEG F. may be effected in a tower of height 25 ft. In the latter case the granules are preferably cooled to below 200 DEG F. while maintained in motion on a vibrating conveyer. The ammonium nitrate may be sprayed at a pressure of 1.0 p.s.i.g. through orifices of diameter 0.025, 0.035 and 0.037 inch, respectively.
