Abstract

<PICT:0834296/IV(c)/1> <PICT:0834296/IV(c)/2> <PICT:0834296/IV(c)/3> A method of cold-waving hair comprises applying to the hair an aqueous solution of a reagent capable of splitting the disulphide linkages in hair keratin and subsequently applying a neutralizer from a device contained within the curl, the neutralizer being contained in the device in dry solid form and being leached from the device by application of an aqueous solution. The hair-waving solution may contain thioglycollic acid and an excess of ammonia or an alkali metal hydroxide, carbonate or bicarbonate, or an organic amine, or mixtures thereof. The neutralizer may be sodium or potassium bromate, sodium iodate, sodium perborate, urea peroxide or mixtures thereof, sodium percarbonate or sodium perpyrophosphate, and may be admixed with citrates, phosphates, oleaginous materials, inorganic salts which tend to reduce swelling of the hair, polyphosphates, ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid, sodium carbonate decahydrate, surface-active substances, perfumes and manganese, copper or iron salts which promote the action of the neutralizing compound. The hair may be treated with the waving solution prior to winding around the device containing the neutralizer, or the hair may be wound around the device and the waving solution may then be applied. The neutralizer composition, in dry, solid, particulate form 10, Fig. 1, may be enclosed within a sheath of thin porous paper 11, which is then wound about a reinforcing bar 12 and a flexible wire 14 which is used to maintain the hair in position (Fig. 5). Other forms of the device include a pipe cleaner which has been saturated with an aqueous solution of the composition and dried; a pervious winding member 20, Fig. 7, containing the composition and equipped with a clasp 22; bibulous paper which has been impregnated with an aqueous solution of the composition and dried; paper containing the composition wholly or partly along one side in a narrow sheath, or an end paper upon which has been extruded and solidified a plastic composition containing the neutralizer and a binder such as polyvinyl alcohol or polyvinyl pyrrolidone which may be plasticized, e.g. with glycerine and ethyl alcohol.
