Abstract

833,922. Washing machines. GENERAL MOTORS (FRANCE). Oct. 13, 1958 [Nov. 1, 1957], No. 34139/57. Class 138 (2). A washing machine includes a rotatable clothes tub, a stationary water container to receive water overflow therefrom, a water inlet to the tub and a pump arranged to draw water from the water container and deliver it through a heater to the tub until the desired temperature is reached. The machine is started by the actuation of timer control knob 20 to close switch 120 and complete the circuit through electromagnet 109 which opens a valve to allow fresh water to enter tub 47 through nozzle 106. When water overflows through apertures 49 it leaves container 23 through aperture 30 and passes over pressure-sensitive switch 33, flows through the pump and heater and is returned to the tub via nozzle 100. When the water level in tube 32 rises sufficiently to actuate switch 33, movable contact 111 disengages from contact 110 and engages contact 112, thus breaking off the fresh water supply and energizing temperature sensitive switch 114, the temperature-sensitive element of which is located near the heater outlet, contact 113 engaging contact 115 when the water is cold. 119 is a conventional bimetallic safety device for electromagnet 117 which turns on gas valve 107 of the heater, the pump operating continuously to circulate water from the container, through the heater and back into the tub. When the water reaches the desired temperature, contact 113 of switch 114 engages contact 116, thus discontinuing the heating and setting in motion timer motor 118 which controls conventional timer mechanism for an automatic sequence of operations. Electric instead of gas heating may be used and the machine may be manually instead of automatically controlled. Specification 770,815 is referred to.
