Abstract
A finely dispersed carrier is incorporated in mixed crystals prior to thermal decomposition to form a catalyst. The carrier is an acidic, basic, or hydrated oxide, preferably Al2O3 or hydrated Al2O3 and/or Cr2O3, or hydrated Cr2O3 and/or silicic acid. The mixed crystals are oxalates and/or formates of metals such as Ni, Co and/or Cu (the oxides of which can be reduced by H2 up to 450 DEG C.) with oxalates and/or formates of metals such as Zn, Mg and Ca (the oxides of which cannot be reduced by H2 under 450 DEG C.). In examples, the mixed crystals are of (a) Ni and Zn oxalates, of Ni content 3.7%, or (b) Ni and Zn formates, molecular ratio 1 : 1. Preferably, a lubricant such as graphite is included in the composition. The catalyst may be inactivated by N2 with a 0.5-1.5% O2 content and subsequently activated with H2.
