Abstract
833,686. Photo-electrically controlled lighting. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Dec. 27, 1956 [Dec. 28, 1955], No. 39323/56. Class 40 (3). [Also in Group XXXVII] A photo-conductive control circuit arrangement, particularly for turning street lights on and off at desired ambient light levels, comprises a source of supply voltage connected in series with the operating winding 1 of a relay 2 and with a photo-conductive cell 3, the relay having contacts 10 operated by an over-centre snap action mechanism having an armature differentially controlled by a spring bias and the magnetic attraction of the relay winding. The circuit under control, e.g. the one or more lamps 13, is connected to the source of supply voltage via the contacts 10. The relay 2 comprises an armature 6 biased by a spring 7 to the full line position and connected by a bow spring 8 to a flexible support member 9 for one of the contacts 10 of a switch whose other contact is mounted on a support member 11. A cadmium sulphide cell is preferred as the photo-conductor, which may be of the microcrystalline layer type in which the sensitive material has been deposited by an evaporative process. The cell may be of the interdigital electrode type. The impedance of the cell is preferably substantially equal to the impedance of the relay winding.
