Abstract

A seating in a housing or on a shaft or journal for a rolling bearing is prepared by coating the seating surface of the housing or journal with a thin layer of a thermoplastic material such as a polyamide or polytetrafluoro-ethylene and then machining the layer to a thickness which provides a seating diameter within prescribed tolerance limits. A polyamide which may be mixed with about 30% of molybdenum disulphide may be applied as a powder to the heated surface. Polytetrafluoroethylene may be applied as a dispersion in a liquid, and the liquid allowed to evaporate; more than one application may be made, and the coating is finally sintered at about 375 DEG C. The metal may first be treated chemically to prevent oxidation, e.g. by phosphatizing. The coating may be finally ground to the desired thickness.
