Abstract

833,334. Valve closure members. MINISTER OF WORKS. Dec. 19, 1956 [Sept. 20, 1955], No. 26879/55. Class 135. A valve comprises a vane having two parts arranged to execute a rolling motion in the same direction as each other about a circle to open and. close effective opposite marginal portions of the vane with respect to a seating; the rolling parts being operatively and positively interconnected by one or more flexible bands or belts carried by the vane and/or by gearing so that fluid pressures acting on the rolling parts at the same face of the vane cancel each other. Thus the rolling action can be effected with comparatively small effort. Fig. 7 shows a valve comprising a fixed cylinder 1 about which roll in the same direction two rollers 2, flexible strips 3A, 3B, Fig. 3, fixed at their ends to the rollers being wound about the rollers and on opposite sides of the cylinder 1. The rollers are also directly connected by further flexible strips 3C, 3D clamped between the rollers and shaped bodies 4. As the rollers 2 are rotated about the cylinder 1, e.g. by pins 7 projecting from a worm-wheel 7A, the bodies 4 are turned out of the general plane of the vane, as shown in Fig. 7, and constituted by the parts 1, 2, 4 and the flexible strips, so that they engage the walls of a conduit or the like to shut off fluid flow, as shown in Fig. 4. Longitudinal relative movement between the cylinder 1 and the rollers 2 is prevented by separate spacing- rings 6, Fig. 2, or annular ridges machined on the cylinder, engaging grooves 5. Several such vane-like structures may be arranged across a conduit and operated simultaneously by worm gearing so that the vanes meet end to end when the conduit is closed. The flexible strips 3A, 3B may be dispensed with and the rollers connected to the cylinder by gears.
