Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the general formula <FORM:0833165/IV (b)/1> acid addition and quaternary ammonium salts thereof, wherein n is 2 to 5 and the R's represent separate lower alkyl groups, containing 1-4 carbon atoms, or together constitute, with the adjacent nitrogen atom, a heterocyclic ring, and the preparation thereof by (a) (wherein n is 2) reacting 3-aza-bicyclo-[3 : 3 : 1]-nonane with ethylene oxide, chlorinating the amino-alcohol obtained, and reacting the product with a secondary amine, (b) (where n is 3) reacting 3-aza-bicyclo-[3 : 3 : 1]-nonane with acrylonitrile, reducing the nitrile so formed, and alkylating the primary amine product, (c) reacting hexahydro-isophthalic anhydride with an N : N-di-lower-alkylalkylene-diamine of which the alkylene chain contains 2-5 carbon atoms, and reducing the resulting imide to the corresponding amine, and (d) if the quaternary compound is desired quaternizing the base prepared by processes (a), (b) or (c). Specification 824,140 is referred to.ALSO:Pharmaceutical compositions for parenteral use comprise a quaternary ammonium salt of a compound of the general formula <FORM:0833165/VI/1> wherein n is 2 to 5 and the R groups are separate lower alkyl groups of 1-4 carbon atoms or together constitute, with the nitrogen atom to which they are attached, a heterocyclic ring, together with a pharmaceutical diluent.
