Abstract

The Specification describes compounds of general formula <FORM:0832989/IV (b)/1> where R1, R2, R3 and R4 each represent hydrogen or alkyl or two R's together a cycloalkyl group, M1, M2, M3 and M4 represent hydrogen or a salt forming cation, e.g. Na, K, Li, NH4 (including ammonium ions derived from organic base amines), X1 to X8 are hydrogen or substituents which are inert against acid hydrolysing agents, e.g. ethyl, alkoxy, carboxyl, hydroxyl, sulphonic acid, nitro, amino or halogen. The compounds can form metal chelates with Mn, Zn, Co or Fe. The compounds are prepared by reacting a 2-hydroxybenzaldehyde, which may contain further substituents, with a 1,2-diaminoalkane or cycloalkane, to form a Schiff's base. The Schiff's base is reacted with hydrocyanic acid and the dinitrile so produced hydrolysed with concentrated hydrochloric acid. Examples are given. The compounds form chelates with complex forming metals e.g. Mn, Zn, Co and Fe. The compounds may be mixed with fertilizers e.g. nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium fertilizers or inert solid carriers e.g. sand and vermiculite.
