A conveyer 2 receives articles 1 and transfers them to a plate 9 until the leading article contacts a switch 10, 11 thereby stopping the conveyer, by disengaging a dog clutch from motor 3 and engaging it with stationary dog 5, and causing pneumatic thrustors 16, 17, 23 to move a pair of lifting bars 12, 13 cyclically outwardly, downwardly, inwardly and then upwardly so that they lift the row of articles to a position above plate 9. The conveyer is then restarted to feed a second row of articles beneath the first. When switch 10, 11 is again actuated the bars 12, 13 execute a further cycle thereby raising a two tiered row into a #-shaped member 30 where one of the upper articles engages a switch 27 thereby causing a pneumatic thrustor 29 and box 30 to move the articles on to a plate 32. On the completion of this movement a switch 34 is actuated thereby causing a thrustor 38 to move a plate 39 across plate 32 by a distance corresponding with the thickness of a row of articles whereupon a cam 41 contacts switch 42 and returns plate 39 and member 30 to their former positions. The machine continues to feed two tiered rows of articles to plate 32, and during this operation of the machine an open top box is placed on the hinged platform 43, a switch 44 is manually operated and a pneumatic thrustor 47 tips platform 43 and the box to a position in which its opening is aligned with the stack of articles on plate 32. When the last row arrives on this plate switch 36 is operated by an article, and if the box is in position so that switch 50 is also operated, the thrustor 38 executes a single long stroke to a position in which cam 41 engages switch 52 thereby pushing the stack from the plate 32 into the box.
