Abstract

915,358. Packaging-machines. FMC CORPORATION. April 24, 1961 [April 28, 1960], No. 14699/61. Class 94(1). A machine for forming batches of containers and loading them into cartons by means of a reciprocating pusher having short and long strokes, the latter for thrusting a batch into a carton, is controlled automatically by pneumatic means including air pressure relief valves operated by the containers and cartons. Containers C, fed by a conveyer 11 on to a platform 12 operate through a lever 81a bleed valve B5 which causes the pusher 14 to make a short stroke, in which a roller 14a engages a valve B4 to initiate its return. After two short strokes, the containers contact a lever 87 operating a slide valve B5 which renders inoperative the valve B4 so that the pusher makes a long stroke to sweep six containers into a carton. Empty cartons are placed on a support 19, originally vertical. A carton flap F operates a bleed valve B1 by engaging a lever 55 whereby the support is pivoted to the horizontal position. In this position a bleeder valve B3 is operated so that the long stroke may take place. During this stroke, bleeder valves B6-B8 are engaged to restore the pneumatic system to the starting condition. The machine may be adjusted for various sizes and numbers of containers by altering the position of the valves and contacts.
