Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the formula I <FORM:0832491/IV (b)/1> in which R1 is an alkyl, aryl or aralkyl group, R2 is hydrogen or an alkyl group of 1-6 carbon atoms and R3 is phenyl, esters thereof with fatty acids of 2-7 carbon atoms and acid addition salts of the esters, and their preparation by treating the appropriate N-phenylethyl-piperid-(4)-one with an alkyl, aryl or aralkyl organometallic compound, e.g. organo-lithium compound, to give the desired piperidin-(4)-ol, or in the case of the esters acylating a piperidin-(4)-ol of the formula I by refluxing with an acid anhydride in the presence of pyridine. The compounds may also be prepared by reacting a styrene compound of the formula <FORM:0832491/IV (b)/2> with an amine of the formula R1.CH2CH2NH2. Products are specified in which R1 and R2 respectively are (1) phenyl, H; (2) phenyl, CH3; (3) a -naphthyl, H; (4) a -naphthyl, CH3; (5) benzyl, H; and (6) n-butyl, H. Acyl derivatives, e.g. acetyl or propionyl, of these compounds are also referred to. N - Phenethyl - piperidones - (4) (optionally bearing alkyl substituents in the 3-position) used as starting materials are made by cyclizing a tertiary amine R3.CH2CH2.N.(CH2CH2.COO-Alkyl) CH2CHR2COOAlkyl and decarboxylating the resulting 5-carbalkoxy-N-phenethyl piperidone as described in Specification 832,490.
