Abstract

832,452. Hydraulic turbines. SULZER FRERES S.A. May 7, 1958 [May 7, 1957], No. 14663/58. Class 110 (3). A water power and storage plant comprises an electric motor generator connected to a combined pump and turbine of the Francis type, having at least three serially connected rotors and a stationary diffuser all disposed in a single casing which acts as a multi-stage storage pump, when the motor generator operates as a motor. The generator may be rigidly coupled to the combined pump and turbine. All the rotors may be of the single flow type or alternatively at least two single flow rotors may be disposed symmetrically on each side of, and in series with, a central double flow rotor. The combined pump and turbine is started by operating the motor generator as a motor and when its normal speed for turbine operation is reached, the motor generator is changed over to run as a generator, whereafter a stop valve in the turbine inflow pipe is opened.
