Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the general formula <FORM:0832250/IV (b)/1> where X is a phenyl group carrying one or more substituents which are C1-C5 alkyl groups, chlorine or bromine atoms, phenyl groups or benzyl groups, or X is a naphthyl group which may carry one or more substituents which are C1-C5 alkyl groups or chlorine or bromine, at least one of the substituents on X occupying an ortho position with respect to the linkage X-O: m is 2-6, n is 2 or 3, N+1 is a quaternary nitrogen atom carrying two C1 or C2 alkyl groups N+2 is also a quaternary nitrogen atom carrying at least one methyl or ethyl group, and either two further such groups, or groups which form part of a pyrrolidino, piperidino, or morpholino ring, and A is an anion of an inorganic or organic acid, e.g. halide or alkyl sulphate. The compounds of the invention may be prepared by quaternizing a suitable diamine of general formula (II) with a methylating or ethylating agent. <FORM:0832250/IV (b)/2> where N3 is a secondary or tertiary nitrogen atom, and N4 a primary, secondary, tertiary or quaternary nitrogen atom. Compound II may be prepared by the following method <FORM:0832250/IV (b)/3> <FORM:0832250/IV (b)/4> where Y and Z are suitable halogen atoms, N5 is a primary or secondary nitrogen atom, and N4 is a tertiary nitrogen atom. Amongst examples given are those for the preparation of 1 : 3 - dimethyl - 2 - [2 - (b - piperidinoethylmethylamino) ethoxy] benzene dimethiodide, 2 - [6 - (b - diethylaminoethylmethylamino) hexyloxy] diphenyl, and 1-[4-(b -morpholinoethylmethylamino)-butyloxy] naphthalene.
