Abstract

Models for use in photo-elastic investigations are made of a bulk polymer which is a transparent or translucent polymeric unsaturated ester having a refractive index nD of at least 1.5 and a photo-elastic constant in the range 10 to 30 kg. per cm. inclusive. Examples describe the production of polymers of benzylmethacrylate, diallylphthalate and allylmethacrylate and of copolymers of benzylmethacrylate or diallylphthalate and allylmethacrylate, by a bulk polymerization process using benzoyl peroxide as catalyst. Polymerization may be effected in two stages.
