Abstract

A sheet of polymer is softened by heat and shaped to the required extent, the polymer being the product of an ethylenic monomer with a resin which has the structure of a copolymer of an olefinic hydrocarbon with a comonomer, the copolymer containing substituent acyloxy groups derived from acrylic or an a -substituted acrylic acid. The monomer may be styrene, the olefinic hydrocarbon may be ethylene and the comonomer may be vinyl acrylate or methacrylate. The sheet may contain a reinforcing filler, e.g. 15-35% glass fibre, and may be shaped by vacuum or pressure forming. In an example styrene was polymerized with a terpolymer of ethylene, vinylacetate and vinyl methacrylate using caprylyl and dicumyl peroxides to form a syrup which was then moulded and heat treated to form a sheet.
