Abstract
A Ziegler-type catalyst is obtained by reacting titanium tetrachloride with aluminium at 100 DEG to 300 DEG C. in an inert atmosphere and in the substantial absence of organic substances capable of reacting with the aluminium or titanium tetrachloride or the product therefrom and treating this product with molecular oxygen in an amount of 20 to 200 c.c. per c.c. of titanium tetrachloride employed. The reaction between the aluminium, e.g. as powder, and titanium tetrachloride may be carried out in nitrogen and in a purified diluent such as hexane, heptane, decahydronaphthalene, cyclohexane, cyclohexene or benzene and the mixture may be agitated by stainless steel balls.ALSO:Ethylene is polymerized in the presence, as catalyst, of a product obtained by reacting titanium tetrachloride with aluminium at 100 DEG to 300 DEG C. in an inert atmosphere and in the substantial absence of organic substances capable of reacting with the product or with the aluminium or the titanium tetrachloride and treating the reaction product with molecular oxygen in an amount of 20 to 200 c.c. per c.c. of titanium tetrachloride employed. The reaction between the aluminium, e.g. as powder, and titanium tetrachloride may be carried out in nitrogen and in a purified sulphur-free diluent such as hexane, heptane, decahydronaphthalene, cyclohexane, cyclohexene or benzene. The polymerization may also be carried out in the above hydrocarbon diluents and the ethylene may be added in more than one stage.
