941,739. Polybutadiene. MONTECATINI SOC. GENERALE PER L'INDUSTRIA MINERARIA E CHIMICA. June 2, 1961 [June 7, 1960], No. 19965/61. Heading C3P. Polybutadiene which may have a molecular weight between 100,000 and 200,000 and a cis-1,4 content higher than 99%, is obtained by polymerizing butadiene in the presence of catalysts obtainable from halogenated organic compounds of metals belonging to the 2nd or 3rd group of the MendelÚeff Periodic Table and a cobalt compound, and regulating the average molecular weight of the polymer by varying the concentration of the monomer in the polymerization medium. The organic metal compound may be Al(C 2 H 5 ) 2 Cl, Al(C 2 H 5 )Cl 2 , Al(C 6 H 5 ) 2 Cl, or an alkyl or aryl-zinc monohalide, or an alkyl- or aryl magnesium halide. The cobalt compound may be cobalt diacetyl acetonate, or a cobalt chloride-pyridine complex. The concentration of the butadiene is generally maintained constant by regulating the addition of monomer in accordance with the polymerization rate under the conditions used . The polymerization is preferably effected in the presence of one or more hydrocarbon solvents and at a temperature of +40‹ to -60‹C.
