Abstract
A catalyst for use in polymerizing acetylene to cyclo-octatetraene comprises a mixture of a nickel cyanide with a nickel enolate or a mixture of nickel enolates or a mixture of a nickel complex of an ortho-amino-phenol or -thio-phenol with a nickel cyanide or enolate, the two components being in a molar ratio between 1:10 and 10:1. The examples refer to (1) nickel acetoacetic ester + nickel acetylacetonate; (3) aminophenol nickel + nickel acetylacetonate; and (4) nickel cyanide + nickel acetoacetic ester.ALSO:Cyclo-octatetraene is prepared by the cyclizing polymerization of acetylene in the presence of a nickel compound catalyst and an anhydrous solvent at increased pressure and temperature, the catalyst being a mixture of a nickel cyanide with a nickel enolate, or with a mixture of two or more nickel enolates, or with a mixture of a nickel complex of an ortho-amino-phenol or -thiophenol with a nickel cyanide or enolate. The molar ratio of the catalyst components may be between 1 : 10 and 10 : 1 and the amounts are preferably about equimolar. Amounts up to 0.03% by weight of the solvent are preferred. Suitable solvents are tetrahydrofurane and/or benzene free of water and peroxides. The temperature may be 100-140 DEG C. A mixture of acetylene and nitrogen may be used, preferably free of oxygen. An antioxidant may be added to the reaction mixture, e.g. up to 0.01% by weight of the solvent of a polyhydroxyphenol, hydroquinone, acyl gallate or bisulphide. The examples illustrate the use of (1) nickel acetoacetic ester and nickel acetylacetonate, (3) aminophenol-nickel and nickel acetylacetonate, and (4) nickel cyanide and nickel acetoacetic ester.
