Der Acetylenpartialdruck beträgt etwa 15 at.
Process for the preparation of cyclooctatetraene
It is known that cyclooctatetraene can be obtained by cyclizing polymerization of acetylene in the presence of nickel catalysts and in the presence of a solvent, e.g. B. a cyclic ether such as tetrahydrofuran, can produce at elevated temperature and pressure. In the known processes, the catalysts used are in particular the halides, cyanides, rhodanides or enolates of nickel. All of these known processes each use a specific catalyst of this type, the only additives being activators, e.g. B. alkaline substances such as oxides, hydroxides, alcoholates, phenolates, carbonates and cyanides of alkali or alkaline earth metals, metal carbides or nitrogen bases can be used. Additions of inhibitors, e.g. B.
Antioxidants to reduce peroxide formation in solvents are known.
When carrying out a continuous process for the production of cyclooctatetraene on an industrial scale, however, the reaction rates and thus the space-time yields achieved by the known process proved to be too low. An increase in the temperature increases the reaction rate, but at the same time leads to increased resin formation due to excessive addition of catalyst.
It has now been found that the continuous production of cyclooctatetraene by cyclizing polymerization of acetylene at elevated pressure and at elevated temperature in the presence of nickel catalysts and an anhydrous solvent is improved if a mixture of several complex nickel enolates or a mixture of nickel cyanide is used as the catalyst at least one complex nickel enolate or a mixture of at least one nickel complex of o-aminophenol or thiophenol and nickel cyanide or at least one complex nickel enolate is used.
Suitable catalysts are, for. B. Mixtures of nickel cyanide with nickel acetate acetic ester, nickel benzoyl acetic ester, nickel acetylacetonate or nickel benzoylacetonate, as well as mixtures of nickel enolates with each other, mixtures of nickel acetate with nickel acetylacetonate or nickel benzoylacetonate. The nickel acetylacetonate / nickel acetoacetic ester system has proven to be particularly advantageous. This mixture is readily soluble in the solvents in question for the reaction. The mixing ratio of the components in the catalyst mixture used in each case varies within wide limits and is between 10: 1 and 1:10 mol. It is preferred to work with catalyst mixtures in which the mixing ratio is within the limits of 1: 2 to 2: 1, z.
B. with mixtures in which the components are present in approximately equivalent amounts.
The solvent used is advantageously cyclic ethers, e.g. B. tetrahydrofuran, or aromatic hydrocarbons, e.g. B. benzene, or mixtures of benzene with tetrahydrofuran. The solvents used must be anhydrous and expediently largely free of peroxide, i. H. the water content must generally be less than 0.01%.
It is advisable to use solvents which have good dissolving power for the catalyst mixtures used.
The use of the mixed catalysts listed above offers the advantage of reducing the amount of catalyst in the continuous process to below 0.3 O / o, based on the solvent, without reducing the reaction rate. To achieve the same reaction rate in the known processes, which each work with a specific substance as a catalyst, 1.5 to 3 times the amount must be used. However, this increased amount of catalyst always leads to increased formation of resinous by-products.
It is expedient to work at temperatures between 80 and 180 ° C., preferably between 100 and 1400 ° C. The acetylene is injected, expediently in the form of acetylene-nitrogen mixtures, at 20 to 200 at, advantageously at 100 to 150 at.
The space-time yield is about 2.0 kg / l reaction space / day. It can be a multiple, e.g. B. 5.0 to 8.0 kg / l reaction space / day can be increased if you use a lower concentration of cyclooctatetraene, e.g. B. less than 10 O / o, in the raw product to be worked up on Cyclooctatetraen accepts.
The use of the mixtures mentioned as catalysts makes the addition of so-called activators, which in most cases leads to the formation of undesired by-products, unnecessary. On the other hand, antioxidants such as polyoxyphenols, hydroquinone, acyl gallates and bisulfides can be added in concentrations of up to 0.010 / o. An increased addition of antioxidants can adversely affect the reaction rate.
It is advantageous to work with the solvent and hydroxyl-containing compounds, such as water, in the absence of oxygen, either as a dissolved gas or in the form of peroxide compounds. In this case, any addition, e.g. B. dehydrating agents such as calcium carbide, calcium hydride, ethylene oxide and antioxidants can be avoided. This measure promotes the increase in the reaction rate to a noticeable extent. As a rule, the acetylene-nitrogen mixture generally to be used for the synthesis should be freed from the last traces of oxygen. In the gas used, the oxygen content should advantageously be below 0.002% and the moisture content below 0.05 g / m 3.
The reaction is best carried out in a known manner in the usual high-pressure iron furnaces, since the material is not exposed to any great stress due to the absence of corrosive substances.
In the synthesis of the cyclooctatetraene according to the invention, the reaction rate can be increased with reduced addition of catalyst to such an extent that the cyclization can be carried out continuously with good throughputs. The formation of the by-products is surprisingly suppressed by the significantly reduced residence times and by the reduced addition of catalyst.
example 1
100 liters of water- and peroxide-free tetrahydrofuran, in which 0.3% by weight of a mixture of nickel acetoacetic ester and nickel acetylacetonate in a ratio of 1: 1 and 0.01% by weight of hydroquinone are dissolved, are put into a 150 l high-pressure oven every hour , pumped in. At the bottom of the furnace, 30-35 Nm3 of a mixture of 40 vol. Introduced acetylene and 60 vol.0 / o nitrogen, which had previously been freed from oxygen as completely as possible. A gas circulation pump circulates the gas mixture at 50 atmospheres. The oven temperature is set between 120 and 125.
Working up gives 12 kg of cyclooctatetraene per hour in addition to small amounts of phenylbutadiene, benzene and solid reaction products. The space-time yield is 1.9 kg of cyclooctatetraene per liter of contact space and day.
Example 2
In a modification of the procedure described in Example 1, the feed is pumped in with 0.2 O / o of the catalyst mixture and without the addition of hydroquinone. The oxygen content in the synthesis gas is less than 0.002 Vol.O / o. The yields of cyclooctatetraene are practically the same as in Example 1.
Example 3
Acetylene is circulated at a pressure of 18 atm and at a temperature of 1200 through a high-pressure furnace with a capacity of 80 liters, which is filled with a mixture of 30 O / o benzene and 70 O / o tetrahydrofuran. The acetylene partial pressure is about 15 at. The amount of gas circulating is 20 to 25 Nm3 / h. In addition, 100 l of solvent of the above composition are pumped through this system every hour. The solvent contains 0.25 01o of a catalyst mixture composed of 1 part of o-aminophenol-nickel and 1.5 parts of nickel acetylacetonate, dissolved or dispersed.
In the synthesis furnace, an internal liquid circulation is kept going according to the mammoth principle by means of a guide tube, which brings about a temperature equalization and also prevents the dispersed aminophenol-nickel from sinking.
When the synthesis product is worked up by distillation, 6.5 to 7.0 kg per hour of cyclooctatetraene are obtained in addition to some phenylbutadiene, benzene and polymeric by-products. The space-time yield is 2.0 to 2.1 kg / l catalyst space and day.
Example 4 The synthesis furnace is operated in the same way as that described in Example 3.
This time a mixture of nickel cyanide and nickel acetoacetic ester in a ratio of 1: 1 and in a concentration of 0.3%, calculated on the solvent, is added as a catalyst.
5.7 kg of cyclooctatetraene are obtained per hour, which corresponds to a space-time yield of 1.74 kg / l of catalyst space and day.
