831,405. Ammunition projectiles. VERWALTUNGS GESELLSCHAFT DER WERKZEUGMASCHINENFABRIK OERLIKON. April 2, 1958 [May 8, 1957], No. 10606/58. Class 9(1) An armour-piercing projectile comprising a core 1 of hard metal such as tungsten carbide and a contour casing 2 of light metal is provided at the forward end of the core with a conical tip 1b, the base area of the cone being smaller than the cross-sectional area of the cylindrical body of the core so that the core has a sharpedged shoulder 12. The overall height of the tip does not exceed 0.35 times the calibre of the core. The core is pushed into the casing 2 until the tip bears against a resilient disc 4 abutting a shoulder 6 within the casing, which is then closed by a screw-threaded plug 3. A driving band 5 of soft iron is pressed on to the casing. A sintered mixture of metal powders having a specific weight greater than 10 grams per cu. cm. may be used to form the core. The shoulder 12 may have a conical chamfer and a wedge-shaped groove 11 may extend around the periphery of the main body of the core, the rear face 15 of the groove being a continuation of the conical surface of the tip 1b, which may also have a conical chamfer. The core angle is preferably between 80 and 100 degrees.
