Abstract

831,159. Moulding plastic containers. MAINARDI, T. June 12, 1957 [June 12, 1956], No. 18535/57. Class 87(2). A process of making "headed" tubular containers utilising the container cap as part of the mould comprises placing a cap 3 in the cavity 8 of a mould 1, placing a plastic tube 4 over a mandrel 2 so that an end 4a of the tube 4 protrudes over a shoulder 10 of the mandrel 2, placing the mandrel 2 in the mould 1 so that the end 4a of the tube is pressed between the shoulder 10 and the mould and the mandrel end firmly holds the cap 3 against the mould, injecting plastic material into the mould so that the plastic material fills the gap between the cap 3 and mandrel 2, unites to the end 4a of the tube and moulds a head on the tube. The end of the mandrel has facets 13 and grooves 12 and, during moulding, plastic material fills the grooves 12 but leaves holes in the moulded head of the tube where the facets 13 contact the cap, which holes are normally covered by the cap and exposed when the cap is removed. In a second embodiment, Fig. 5 (not shown), the end of the mandrel is flat and is pressed against an imperforate cap which is spaced from the bottom and sides of the mould cavity so that during moulding the plastic material first flows around the extension of the cap and then inside the cap to mould a tube head with a cap that is " sealed " on its exterior by a film of plastic material. The cap may be of metal or of a higher melting point plastic material to that of the tube and head.
