Abstract

831,088. Air conditioning apparatus. CARRIER ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. Sept. 7, 1956 [Dec. 16, 1955], No. 27508/56. Class 137 [Also in Group XIII] Air-conditioning apparatus comprises a casing 2 with an air-inlet 27 in the bottom, a fan 10 for drawing air upwardly through the casing and discharging it at 11, a refrigerating plant consisting of a compressor 20, an external air-cooled condenser, and finned evaporator coils 14 which latter are placed in the path of the rising air to cool the same. The air is constrained to pass in heat-exchange relationship with the evaporator by baffles 16, 17, 18, the water separated for the air on cooling falling from coil to coil, and from the bottom edges of the baffles, into troughs 55, formed in a tray 23, which discharge, through strainer holes, into an exit trough 24. The tray 23 is made of non- heat conducting material, e.g., polystyrene, to avoid condensation of water on the underside thereof. Such condensation is undesirable since the water would drop on the filter 25 and render it useless. The end baffle 18 is pivotally mounted at 45 to swing from the position, shown in Fig. 4, in which a part of the air by-passes the coils 14, to the position in which the baffle abuts against a stop 52, the whole of the air then being constrained to pass around the coils 14. The baffle is held in either position by a C-shaped spring 49 which snaps over the dead-centre as the baffle is moved from one position to the other. The face of the baffle 18 is lined with felt 42 which makes a seal with the stop 52 and also hangs into the trough to make a seal therewith. If the baffle 18 is positioned to allow some air to bypass the evaporator, the temperature of the evaporator is lowered and the overall removal of water from the air is increased. The casing stands upon a frame 7 holding louvres, and may be surmounted by a plenum chamber having a discharge grille in its front face. Alternatively, the fan discharge opening may be formed in one leg of an L-sectioned plate which is secured over an opening in the casing 2 either with the discharge opening in the vertical face of the casing, or by reversing the L-plate, in the top of the casing, to produce a horizontal discharge or a vertical discharge respectively. The condenser may be water-cooled and enclosed in the casing 2. Specification 828,082 is referred to.
