Abstract
709,152. Respiratory appliances. AIR REDUCTION CO., Inc. March 11, 1952 [March 23, 1951], No. 6320/52. Class 81(2) ' An oxygen tent comprises a canopy for supporting over a bed to form an enclosure, a canopy support, a cabinet containing a heat-insulated cooling box housing refrigerator coils and means for circulating the tent atmosphere, the cooling box having an open side which extends outside the cabinet and is provided with a collar to receive in a gastight manner the mouth of a sleeve formed on one side of the canopy. The canopy 10, Fig. 9, is formed with a roof portion 15 from which depend three side panels 16 and a fourth side panel 17 which is provided with a pocket consisting of panels 22, 23, 24 and 25 the lower edges of which are hemmed to contain a drawstring. Pleats 18 having " zippered" openings are provided in the side edges of the canopy 10 and the lower edges of the side panels 16, 17 may be tucked under a mattress 14 or bedding. Tubular loops of the material of the canopy 10 are provided in the roof portion 15 to receive canopy supporting hangers 32. The horizontal hangers 32 are rotatably secured to a horizontal portion 31 of a rod 30 which is adjustably attached to the cabinet but which may be rotated into a position over the cabinet for storage purposes. An insulated cooling box 47 disposed in the cabinet 11 contains cooling coils 56 on which cooling fins are arranged. A plate 57<1> divides the cooling box 47 into two chambers. A housing 37 is mounted on the cabinet 11 above the cooling box 47 and is divided into two ducts 62, 63 by a baffle 61 which registers with the plate 57<1> in the cooling box 47. A perforated plate 59 is placed across the mouth of the ducts 62, 63. The canopy pocket is placed over the housing 37 and tied over a rubber collar 28 arranged round an upwardly projecting neck portion 50 of the cooling box 47 so that oxygen circulated in the cooling box 47 by a fan 65 is drawn from the canopy 10 into the nearer duct 63 and is discharged into the canopy through the other duct 62. Oxygen from a container 20 passes into the cooling box 47 through a pipe 19. The cabinet 11 houses the remainder of the refrigerating system in which refrigerant passes from a compressor 81 to condenser coils 84. a reservoir 86 for condensed refrigerant, a heat exchanger 88 whereby the condensed refrigerant is cooled by evaporated refrigerant returning to the compressor 81 from the cooling coils 56 in the cooling box 47, a valve 89 controlled by a temperature sensitive coil 71 which is located in the duct 63 taking oxygen from the canopy 10 and which is set by a device 91 on the top cabinet 11 and a valve 90 which ensures proper flooding of the cooling coils for the desired setting of the temperature sensitive coil 71. Preferably the refrigerant used is that known under the Registered Trade Mark "Freon." Water which condenses on the cooling coils 56 drips to the bottom of the cooling box 47 and flows into a tube 74 which either is transparent or has a transparent end portion which is secured outside the cabinet 11 in such a way that it shows how much water has collected. The water can be led into a bucket by detaching the end portion of the tube 74 'from the side of the cabinet 11. A thermometer 72 in the duct 63 indicates the temperature of gas leaving the canopy 10.
