Abstract
830,966. Cutting by fusion. HANCOCK & CO. (ENGINEERS) Ltd. May 4, 1956 [Feb. 8, 1955], No. 3759/55. Class 83 (4). A flame-cutting burner head, particularly for preparing the edges of plates prior to welding, comprises a burner 1, Fig. 1, arranged to cut a lower bevel in the edge of the plate and a burner 3 arranged to cut an upper bevel in said edge, each of the two burners being carried by an individual mounting 17 and being supported above the plate by a height control wheel 24, 20 running on the surface of the plate and causing its associated burner to rise and fall in conformity with said surface, each burner being biased by a spring arranged to urge the burner upwardly whereby the wheel is relieved of the bulk of the weight of the vertically moving parts. The burner head also carries a third burner 2 arranged to cut a vertical root between the two bevels. The burners 1, 2, 3 are arranged in that sequence in the direction of cutting. The burners 1 and 3 are clamped in burner holders 11 on which protractor scales 19 are provided for setting the angle of the burners. Burner 2 is supported vertically in its holder 11. Each holder 11, Fig. 6, is mounted on the lower end of a tube 10 fixed within a block 7 running on rollers 8 along vertical guides 4 in a casing 17; the guides 4 are preferably of circular cross-section, Fig. 8 (not shown). Above the casing 17 is a fixed vertical tube 15 providing a fixed anchoring point 13 for a tension spring 14 secured at 12 to the lower end of the tube 10. A collar 31 on the upper end of tube 10 is adapted to engage an adjustable tube 32 for limiting the downward movement of the burner. Vertical adjustment of tube 32 is effected by a screw 34 and a spring 33 is provided between block 7 and tube 32. The supports 17 for the bevel cutting burners 1, 3 have stub shafts 16 mounted in slide members 35, Fig. 2 (not shown) slidable in a horizontal slideway 36a, Fig. 1, by means of lead screws 37. The support for burner 2 is also adjustably mounted on the slideway 36a. Burner 3 has its individual wheel 20 vertically adjustable in the holder 11 by a screw 23. A single wheel 24 may be used for both burners 1, 2. This wheel may be mounted for vertical adjustment in the holder of burner 2 which carries an arm 25 supporting a finger screw 29 whose upper end bears against a bar 30 secured to the holder of burner 1. Rotation of screw 29 therefore adjusts the height of burner 1. Alternatively the wheel 24 may be carried by the holder of burner 1 and used to control the height of both burners 1, 2 or the burners 1, 2 may have individual height control wheels. The slideway 36a is supported on a profiling machine able to execute cuts in both longitudinal and transverse directions whereby the four edges of a plate may be cut successively by swinging the cutting head into four successive positions. Control valves 41 for heating oxygen, fuel gas, and cutting oxygen are supported on a vertical post 38 extending above the slideway 36a.
