Abstract
Oxidation dyeings or prints are produced on textile materials of vegetable, animal or synthetic origin by applying an azomethine formed by reacting a primary aromatic amine with a heterocyclic or aromatic aldehyde, alone or in admixture with an aromatic hydroxy compound, and then applying heat in the presence of an acid-reacting or acid-yielding agent, the azomethine being split and regenerating the amine, which is then oxidized. The acid-reacting or acid-yielding agent, such as a salt or ester of an organic or inorganic acid, may be incorporated in the dyeing or printing mixture or, alternatively, the padded or printed material may be subjected to acid-steaming. Oxidizing agents, e.g. chromates, bichromates, peroxides or chlorates, and oxidation catalysts, e.g. iron, copper or vanadium salts, may be added to the dyeing or printing mixture or, alternatively, a subsequent oxidation treatment, e.g. in a chrome-acetic acid bath, may be applied. Multicoloured prints may be effected by the pre-application of a white or coloured resist. Vat dyestuffs may also be printed alongside the oxidation dyestuffs. The amine or aldehyde from which the azomethine is prepared may have solubilizing acid groups, and the azomethines employed in the examples are those prepared from 4-amino-diphenylamine, 4,41-diaminodiphenylamine, 1,4-diamino-benzene, 4-diethylamino - 1 - aminobenzene, 2,4 - diamino-toluene, 3 - amino - phenol, 2,4 - diamino-phenol, 4 - amino - 41 - methoxy - diphenylamine, 2,4,41 - triaminodiphenyl or 1,5-diaminonaphthalene and the sodium salt of benzaldehyde sulphonic acid, or from 1,3-diaminobenzene or 1,5-diaminonaphthalene and furfurol, or from 2,4-diamino-1-methylbenzene or 4-aminodiphenylamine and terephthalaldehyde. Numerous examples of dyeing and printing cotton, regenerated cellulose fibres and cellulose acetate films are given.
